This article proposes that the participation experiences carried out in the community make important contributions to the achievement of the objectives agreed in the multilateral agreement Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, especially when considering direct democracy that has been barely considered. The above involves a critique of the way in which the Mexican State ─based on the strategies for the implementation of said agreement─ presents its position towards indigenous peoples by identifying them only as vulnerable groups, thereby continuing their asymmetry policy. The proposal of this paper consists of identifying and recognizing the contribution of forms of community participation, derived from communalism and communalocracy, to consider their incorporation into the participation laws of local governments in order to improve the relationship between citizens and governments that is established in Sustainable Development Goal 16.Downloads
